The Washington Demons will look to wrap up what has been a marvelous cross country season with a strong performance at the Class 3A State Championships this morning in Fort Dodge. Washington will have its entire girls team running at state after finishing second as a team at districts last week, while two Demon boys, junior Micah Rees and sophomore Tyler Alderton, look to try and medal.

The Washington girls brought home a Southeast Conference team championship and had the lowest team score for a meet in school history. Freshman Iris Dahl has clocked the top time for the Demons this year and ran the course in 19 minutes and 46 seconds to finish sixth at district. Sophomores Quincy Griffis and Lauren Horak will try to duplicate their top-15 times from districts that got them medals, while fellow sophomores Alyvia Anderson and Kendall Hinrichsen just missed the medal stand but will have a second crack in Fort Dodge.

In the boys’ race, Rees is eyeing a state title after a dominant season. He medaled in every race and at one point won four straight meets. His second-place time of 15 minutes and 59 seconds at districts was a personal best and one of the fastest times in school history. Alderton also hit a PR at 17:08 to earn 13th at districts. The 3A state meet will begin with the girls’ race at 10:30 this morning.
