An area battle on the volleyball court broke out in Columbus Junction on Tuesday with Highland emerging in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference matchup by beating the host Wildcats in four sets.

The Huskies came out on top with set scores of 26-24, 25-21, 19-25, and 25-19. Sarah Burton paced the offense with 14 kills while MyLei Smith and Grace Prybil collected 19 and 13 assists, respectively. Burton recorded 16 digs and Adeline Krotz was a perfect 22 of 22 serving with three aces. The Wildcats’ Aracely Garza led the team with nine kills and six digs, Sera Vela had 21 assists and nine aces, and Isabel Rendon was perfect on all 13 serve attempts. Both teams participated in the Brink’s Bench – Fight Like An Iowa Girl cancer fundraiser for Lisa Brinkmeyer. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s basketball and volleyball hall of fame inductee and current assistant director of the IGHSAU is battling brain cancer and every team in the league on Tuesday helped raise funds for her treatment.

Highland improves to 4-4 overall, 2-2 in the SEISC, and they travel to the Cardinal tournament on Saturday. Columbus drops to 1-12, 0-3 in the league, and face Hillcrest Academy tonight.
