The top 10 countdown of the best sports stories from the 2021-22 academic year continues this week and today we look at number five on our list for Washington. The fifth best story takes us to the cross country course with one Demon senior leaving his mark for the program.

Lance Sobaski busted onto the cross country season late into his sophomore year where he qualified for the state meet and placed 95th in his debut showing. That proved to be the beginning of one of the best careers the Demons have ever seen with Sobaski becoming the program’s first Southeast Conference winner his junior season and improving to 27th at state in 2020. The upward trend to stardom continued into the 2021 fall where the senior won numerous meets, was a two-time SEC winner including helping the team capture gold, and he brought home hardware from Fort Dodge. Sobaski capped off his career placing eighth in the class 3A meet clocking in at 16:20. The senior continued his dominance into the track season where he was a four time state qualifier placing fourth in the 3200m, he was a part of the runner-up distance medley relay, and he had a pair of sixth place showings in the 800m and 1600m. Sobaski will continue to run in college for the Wartburg cross country and track teams in Waverly.

Check back in tomorrow as we stay on the cross country course to look at a historic day for the Demon teams.
