Christina Bohannan, the Iowa State Representative for the 85th district and Law Professor at the University of Iowa, is the Democratic nominee for Iowa’s new 1st Congressional District. During a July 29th Fairfield rally, Bohannan spoke about her experiences growing up as the daughter of a former farmer turned construction worker and living in a trailer park in Florida with limited income.

Bohannan, who graduated from the University of Florida with a Law Degree, said that she got a fair chance, but her father, as well as some of the people she has met campaigning, have not received a fair chance at the “American Dream.” Bohannan spoke after the event with KCII about what programs she thought contributed to her fair shot.

“What helped me was that social security and Medicare were absolute lifelines for our family, and I see that right now in Iowa with families that need those programs to get by. Also, access to public education is really important because I owe my life to my teachers, and having that strong public education was so important to me. We have had fantastic public schools in Iowa, and we have been number one in the country, but now we are seeing disinvestment in public education with an emphasis on vouchers.”

Bohannan will be running against Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Election Day is November 8th
