It’s often said that in baseball, success begins with pitching and defense. That’s exactly where things started for the 2022 edition of the Hillcrest Academy Ravens. Hillcrest ended the season fifth in the state in Class 1A with 15 runners caught stealing. Liam Schrock gunned down all 15 would-be-base-stealers, placing him fourth in Iowa. The Hillcrest pitching staff was stingy with free passes, surrendering just 77 all season, sixth fewest in 1A. Raven hurlers Jace Rempel, Luke Schrock and Seth Ours all had at least twice as many innings pitched as walks. In total, the Hillcrest defense registered 202 assists, eighth most in 1A. Luke Schrock led the way with 53, top 15 in 1A. The Ravens finished the year with a 12-11 overall record.
