When a team is senior heavy and full of experience, you expect those veterans to rise to the occasion when the season is on the line. Bo Schmidt answered that bell for the Sigourney baseball team on Tuesday and the senior carried the Savages to a 2-0 win over Wayne in a class 1A district semifinal.

Fresh off of a 21-0 offensive shellacking in the first round against Moulton-Udell, the Savages needed pitching and defense in this one to escape by the Falcons (10-12). Schmidt delivered tossing 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball in 90 pitches before Ty Shafranek came in to record the final two outs for the win. The only runs of the game came in the fourth when Schmidt launched a line drive blast to left field to give the Savages all the tallies they needed.

The senior tells KCII Sports what was working on the mound and how the home run felt off the bat. “I was locating my fastball really well and once I got that going they were guessing with the curveball and slider. Those pitches had a ton of movement that allowed me to get strikeouts. The home run was on a changeup down low with two strikes. I lunged for it and got the barrel on the ball and next thing you know it was over the fence. It felt amazing off the bat and on the sweet spot.”

Sigourney improves to 19-5 and advances to Saturday’s district title game at home against Moravia. The Mohawks are 20-6 and qualified for this bout after edging Southeast Warren 3-2.
