The hardware that is coming home is plentiful for the Washington boys’ track team, as they delivered eight medals out of 20 qualified events over the weekend at the 2022 Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines.

The Demons made a ton of noise in the team standings throughout the three days finishing with 44 points to place fourth in class 3A, a jump from 12th last year. Dallas Center-Grimes won it all with 73. For the second straight spring Elijah Morris snatched gold in the 400m dash by leaving the competition in the dust with a time of 48.96 seconds. That broke a 50 year school record set by Don Adams in 49.0 seconds. Head Coach Steve Roth tells KCII Sports the junior delivered on the biggest stage. “What can I say about Elijah. There was a lot of pressure on him to go back-to-back and get us a lot of points and he handled it well. He got out really well in that race and kept building the lead. The wind had died down at that point and he ended with a convincing win.”

The junior had himself a busy weekend at the Blue Oval also helping the distance medley relay place second in 3:30.72 with the rest of the team being Ethan Patterson, Jacob Miller, and Lance Sobaski and he also anchored a third place sprint medley team in 1:34.65 with the others being Patterson, Austin Rebling, and Miller. Morris just missed out on the 200m finals finishing ninth in the prelims in 22.84 seconds. Sobaski rounded out a stellar career with three open event medals including fourth in the 3200m (9:47.72), sixth in the 800m (1:58.2), and sixth in the 1600m (4:24.54). Brayden Hartman did some damage in the throwing events by having a runner-up heave of 156 feet in the discus and placing eighth in the shot put tossing 51’5.5’’. Other top finishes included Quinn Wubbena 14th in the 400m hurdles (57.58) and Miller 14th in the 100m (11.4). The Demon girls had a pair of events compete with Quincy Griffis placing 22nd in the 3000m (12:10.73) and Abigail Kleese was 22nd in the 800m (2:32.15).
