As temperatures drop and residents remain indoors, the Kalona Public Library is encouraging everyone to embrace the season and find comfort as a part of the Hygge Challenge.

During the month of January, residents can stop by the library to pick up a Hygge Challenge card to participate in 30 different activities that bring comfort and joy. Once the card has been completed, residents can return it to the library for a chance to win a prize. Kalona Public Library Assistant Librarian Patty Stolbom says the Hygge lifestyle is a Danish concept of finding warmth and comfort in simple things and slowing down. Stolbom explains why she thought to organize this program, “A lot of people experience a letdown of one sort or another after the holidays. There are very few people that would say ‘January is my favorite month of the year.’ And so we just thought of having something fun with a theme and just putting some ideas and thoughts into people’s heads of how to enjoy the winter season.”

Residents will have until February 7th to complete the card and hand it in to the library. The library will award three different prizes on February 8th.
