waco-2

It was the home opener in Wayland for the WACO basketball teams on Friday when they entertained Southeast Iowa Super Conference foe New London and both schools recorded a split.

The Warrior girls nabbed their first victory of the season with a 49-21 triumph over the Tigers on the strength of a 26-8 second quarter that built a lead that only grew after the break. Ellah Kissell went off for the blue and white by collecting a game-high 31 points on 15 made shots. Grace Coble and Katie Leichty added six points a piece.

The WACO boys suffered a heartbreaker by falling 60-57 in overtime. It was all Warriors early on by building a 16-7 lead after one and 33-16 at the break. The difference was 14 heading into the final quarter, but a 20-6 Tiger frame forced the extra period where they outscored the Warriors 12-9. WACO shot 28% from the floor, hauled in 63 rebounds, and forced 21 steals. Simeon Reichenbach recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds while Reece Oswald added nine points. Mason Miller brought in 17 boards and Cody Graber recorded 11.

The girls improve to 1-2 and the boys drop to 1-1. They both get back on the court tomorrow at Columbus Community.
