The Wellman Golf Course hosted the 27th annual State of Iowa Sand Green State Golf Championships last week. The City of Wellman is one of only three towns left in the state, along with Humeston and Malvern, that have courses with sand greens.

The Wellman men handled business with a team score of 712, beating Humeston’s 745 and Malvern’s 813. The Wellman women were also winners shooting a low score 688, beating Humeston’s 743 and Malvern’s 785. Individual titles also came Wellman’s way with Josh Boone carding a low score 133 over the two day event, including a second day 61, to beat the field by eight. Jill Mitchell brought home the individual championship by 10 shots, finishing with a two day score of 155. Duncan McCain was second in the men’s field with a 141 with Kaleb Martin third at 143. Teri Taylor was second in the women’s scoring with a 165.

Other individual places for Wellman golfers in the men’s field included Devon Young fifth, Shannon McCain 11th, Chris Bringman 12th, Rob Bush 16th and Trent Fisher 17th. Other individual places for Wellman women’s golfers included Shannon Martin sixth, Amy Drayfahl eighth, Brandy Gholson 10th, Jody Drozd 11th, Brooke Bringman 12th and Tomi Patterson 19th.
