winfield-mtunion-2

It’s just the second week of the fall sports season and one area school is already celebrating homecoming with Winfield-Mt. Union enjoying a week of festivities. The Wolves football squad will hope to end the week with a win on Friday when they welcome Iowa Valley for a district showdown.

The WMU (1-0) offense was as good as advertised in last week’s opener where they pounced all over Moravia 84-34 including a seven touchdown second quarter. Cam Buffington was spectacular in his sophomore debut being responsible for 10 touchdowns racking up 448 yards of total offense as the quarterback. Iowa Valley moved to 1-1 last week after a 52-47 slugfest victory over BGM. Evan Kearney is the Tiger to key on, as the junior has 504 total yards and seven touchdowns in seven games.

WMU Head Coach Scott McCarty knows his defense has to be ready this week. “They are always a very physical team and we run right at you in the B and C gap. We have to be fundamental at the point of attack otherwise they will run right through us all night. We will have our hands full so we will have to dial it in this week and put ourselves into a position to be successful.”

The homecoming matchup begins at 7 p.m. Friday in Winfield.
