A two hour lightning delay caused another long night of baseball for Washington on Thursday, but a couple road wins made for a happy ride home in a doubleheader sweep of their rival Mount Pleasant (2-13, 1-9).

Game one was halted in the second inning due to weather, but the layoff did not cool the Demon bats and crooked number innings was a theme in a 23-8 thrashing in five frames. They scored three in the first, seven in the second, six in the third, one in the fourth, and six more in the seventh to finish with 23 hits. One through nine everyone recorded a knock led by Lucas Kroll going 4-for-5 with four RBI and Jacob Miller went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Ethan Zieglowsky tossed all five innings giving up eight runs on eight hits and striking out four.

Another 17 hits in the nightcap allowed Washington to put up their second 20-plus run performance by winning 21-10 in five. The offense continued to score in every inning and they were led by Reece Mayer going 4-for-5 with five RBI. The senior was scooting around the base paths all night with a rare three triples in the two games. Kroll added another three hits and Zieglowsky was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Isaac Vetter, James Strabala, and Travis Leyden each saw work on the hill with Leyden recording the final six outs.

Head Coach Nathan Miller was pleased with how his team responded after the long delay. “It is a test. Anytime you have a two hour delay it is an adjustment and this year has been full of them. It started with Zieglowsky sitting for two hours and having to reheat up and be effective. He did a terrific job for us on the mound. Then our offense came to work again and that has been a strength for us all year.”

The Demon softball team took care of business with 11-1 and 18-2 victories to improve to 13-12, 7-3 in the league. Both Washington sports will travel to Fort Madison on Monday.
