A long night of softball translated to a split for the Washington softball team on Monday when they traveled to Burlington for a Southeast Conference doubleheader with the Grayhounds.

Game one was a marathon with an 11 inning affair that saw the Demons steal a 6-5 victory. A two run single by the Grayhounds (3-5) in the sixth tied it up at 5-5 and that score held true until the 11th when an Emmy Wenger RBI groundout plated Kellie Dallmeyer that proved to be the game winner. Bella Salazar was a warrior in the circle tossing all 11 frames giving up nine hits and three earned runs in 155 pitches. Head Coach Ben Obermann loved the poise from his young eighth grade hurler. “We threw her into the gauntlet last week in her first starts as a varsity pitcher and that prepared her for tonight. Nothing really got to her and I kept checking in throughout the game to see how she was feeling. No one was taking the ball from her. She wanted to finish it off for her teammates and Bella kept us in it. It was an outstanding team win.” Dallmeyer was spectacular at the dish going 4-for-5 with one RBI. Ella Greiner went 3-for-4 with one run driven in.

The nightcap started out rocky with seven first inning Bloodhound (3-5) runs and Washington could never fully recover in an 11-5 loss. Another eighth grader Halle Cuddeback got her first start in the circle and settled in after the first frame. She tossed six innings giving up 11 runs on 13 hits. Dallmeyer added two more knocks at the plate and Ava Turner went 2-for-4 with one RBI. The Demons move to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in SEC play.

The Washington baseball team dropped both games against the Bloodhounds (4-1) by 8-5 and 15-1 tallies to fall to 3-4 on the season. Both squads get back on the diamond Thursday at Keokuk.
