A tied match at half, turned into a lopsided Mid-Prairie win in the second 40 minutes as the Golden Hawk girls soccer team beat area school Columbus in Wellman Monday 7-0. Neither team could find their footing offensively in the first half with the two teams locked in a scoreless tie as they got to intermission.

In the second half, the flood gates opened for the Hawks. They scored six of their seven goals in the first 25 minutes of the second stanza including two goals in 30 seconds. Finding the scoring column for Mid-Prairie were Esther Hughes and Julia Boller with two goals apiece and Kaitlin Martin, Evelyn Gerber and Kina Miller with one goal each. Boller added two assists and Katrina Curtiss one. After the match junior Esther Hughes, who is in the top eight in class 1A in goals scored, talked about her big night and season. “Getting older and strong is important. We did miss a year of development but I think we have made progress. I have a lot of great teammates who do a good job of getting the ball to us up front and gives us a lot of chances to score.”

With the win, Mid-Prairie is now 7-3. Columbus falls to 4-3.
