In the words of Oprah, “You get a hat trick, she gets a hat trick, everyone gets a hat trick!” Washington’s Trina Griffin was the headliner in the Demon girls’ soccer opener on Monday with a double hat trick and last night someone else stole the show. Behind a three goal performance from junior Greta Rothe, the Demons utilized a big second half to soar by Fort Madison 6-2 in the Southeast Conference and home opener.

Rothe and freshman Giselle Marcelino each found the back of the net in the first half, but so did the Bloodhounds, and the game was tied at 2-2 heading into the break. The second half was dominated by the Orange and Black with the ball spending most of its time on the Demons’ side and they had many shots on goal. Rothe cashed in two more times to complete the hat trick including her last one being from about 35 yards out that snuck into the corner of the goal. Griffin managed the other two scores to make it eight for her in just two games. Rothe explained what went well for the team. “I think we did great at fighting for the ball and played well as a team. We passed well, our defenders did amazing in stopping their forwards, and we worked up the field. Everyone played their role and that helped us win.”

The Demon boys traveled to Fort Madison and after trailing 2-0 at half, battled back to tie it up, but ultimately fell 4-2. Brayan Arreola had both of the goals and Cole Anderson kept Washington in it with 19 saves in goal.

The Demon girls finish the first week 2-0 including 1-0 in conference. The boys drop to 1-1 and 0-1 in the league. Both teams play Burlington on Monday.
