Running into a buzzsaw that is the #5 ranked Sabers of Central DeWitt was the challenge for the Washington girls’ basketball team on Saturday and the Demon season came to an end with a 75-31 loss in a class 4A regional semifinal.

As heard on KCII, Alex Murphy had the game’s first point of the night on a turn around jumper at the free throw line, but the home Sabers quickly answered with a 17-0 run on the strength of turning the Demons over in the press. The score was 30-15 at the break and a 25-9 Central DeWitt third quarter quickly put the game to bed. The Sabers forced 16 steals and hit 11 threes including five from Taylor Veach and the junior finished with a game-high 28 points. Anna Nacos led Washington with 12 points and Murphy tallied 11. Head Coach Shannon Rugg tells KCII Sports he was proud of how his team continued to fight. “I am really proud of our girls. We had nothing to lose tonight so I told them to go out there, put it all on the line, and see what happens. Our girls showed up and played hard. Our two seniors in Anna and Josie are going to be tremendously missed and their leadership was outstanding.”

The Demon girls close the season 3-19 and bid farewell to a pair of seniors in Nacos and Josie Tanner. The Sabers are 15-2 and host Marion tonight for the right to go to state.
