If there is a secret to slowing down Kaylee Weber, the code was not cracked by the Wayne girls’ basketball team. In a Class 1A regional quarterfinal in Sigourney on Tuesday, the road Falcons had no answer for the 5’10’’ post player and the senior carried the Savages to a 57-34 playoff win.

As heard on KCII, it was freshman Carly Goodwin that made her presence known early with the first six Savage points, but Sigourney led just 10-8 after one. What happened after that is something Falcon fans can’t erase from their memory soon enough. Weber went on a tear by scoring 15 straight Savage points to have 17 at the half and help build a 26-10 advantage. Trying to double the senior in the second half still didn’t work and Weber continued to feast to stretch the lead to 48-16 after three. She finished with 32 points for the game and hauled in 17 rebounds. Weber connected on 13 of 18 shots and for good measure added three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Carly Goodwin had nine points, Joselyn Abell eight points, and Rain Barthelman created five steals.

Head Coach Zach Tremmel tells KCII Sports he credits the whole team’s ability to feed the rock to Weber. “We know teams are going to concentrate on her, but to the credit of our team when we get a lead like we did that is when Kaylee can really take over. If we are down teams can sag in on the post and it makes it hard to score. It was a team effort tonight and Wayne is a good program.” The Sigourney defense forced 16 steals in the win.

The Savages move to 18-5 and advance to Friday’s regional semifinal against #11 Lenox (19-3). The game will be played at Clarke High School in Osceola and can be heard on AM and FM KCII.
