The City of Kalona is set to distribute another 200 boxes of food to those in need tomorrow during their next “Pop Up Pantry.”

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says through generous donations and supplemental supplies from Hawkeye Area Community Action Corporation (HACAP), they will hand out between 10 to 15,000 pounds of food, which takes about three days to get ready for distribution, “We got to take the east side of our city shop and remove everything that’s in there as far as big equipment and then we convert it into almost an assembly line type area. So we’ll do that on Thursday and then Friday morning we’ll have a group with city staff, roughly about eight or 10 people down there that box up the 200, which takes about 90 minutes, and then that afternoon we’ll typically get the frozen items and then the (Mid-Prairie) school district has been gracious enough to allow us to use their freezer space for 24 to 48 hours to accommodate (storage) and that’s been really wonderful and then we’ll have a small group come in Saturday morning prior to 9:00 a.m. and start to bag up those perishable and frozen items so we can get them out starting at nine.”

Schlabaugh says food boxes include meat, cheese, butter, eggs, frozen microwaveable meals, and various non-perishable items. Drive up distribution is 9 to 11 a.m. tomorrow at the public works building. No proof of residence or income is required for those needing a food box.
