For the third consecutive game the Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team held on in a nail biter to stay unbeaten and their latest being the most dramatic. At home last night Mediapolis pushed the Wolves to the brink and forced a pair of overtime periods before WMU triumphed for another two-possession win 68-62.

The Bulldogs (3-2) made a run early with a 19-10 advantage after one, but WMU quickly answered by notching the game up at 28 all at the break. That margin stayed true in the second half with the game tied at 55 after 32 minutes and both teams managed just four points in the first overtime. The Wolves outscored the Bulldogs 9-3 in the second overtime to claim victory. Kyndal Townsley led the offense with 19 points on six of 14 shooting. Jobey Malone added 15 points and 10 boards while Farrah Nelson managed 10 points.

The WMU boys made it a clean sweep on the night by coming out on top in a low scoring affair 35-32. Neither team took control in this one with the Wolves holding an 11-7 lead after one, but trailed 21-19 at the break. The back-and-forth trend continued in the second half, but holding the Bulldogs (0-4) to just three fourth quarter points proved to be the difference. Cam Buffington led the way with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Abram Edwards also recorded a double-double with 11 points, 11 boards, and swatted four blocks.

The girls stay unbeaten at 7-0 and the boys improve to 2-1. Both squads get back on the court Friday at Wapello.
