Students in the Columbus Community and Winfield-Mount Union school districts got a look at what online classrooms could be like when both districts conducted a virtual learning day this past Monday. Jeff Maeder, superintendent for both schools, says they held the virtual day as a “just in case practice” in preparation for the possibility of school closures down the road.  Maeder says both districts have been fortunate to be 100 percent onsite for classroom learning since the start of the school year. “We’re just grateful for every day we can have kids onsite. We want to reiterate that it’s the best form of learning, that is what our students need, they need to be with teachers face-to-face. And there is no intent or imminent plan to move towards virtual learning.” Maeder says teachers and administrators will evaluate how they fared with their “test run” to see where any gaps might exist in their online learning model. He says the exercise will help the districts be that much further ahead should a move to more virtual learning become necessary in the future.
