Harvest is coming to an end in Iowa with only 2% of Iowa’s corn for grain crop left to be harvested. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Iowa’s corn harvest is over three weeks ahead of last year and 11 days ahead of the five-year average. Some corn fields that were damaged by the derecho in August remain to be disked down. And extra tillage is being done by some farmers out of concern for volunteer corn next season due to the damaged crop this year. Last week, farmers had 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork that included applying fertilizer and manure, harvesting corn for grain, baling corn stalks, and hauling grain to elevators.
