The City of Kalona is once again offering a pop-up pantry for those in need of food in time for Thanksgiving. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says drive-thru pickup will be available on a first-come-first-served basis Wednesday, November 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the city shop at 711 A Avenue. Schlabaugh says their goal is to have 200 food boxes available to distribute to Kalona-area residents facing food insecurity, “If somebody is in need and needs food, get in line, and we’ll work with you until we’re out of boxes. And typically that’s been enough to service a good portion of our community and surrounding area. So, if history kind of holds true, we’ll have enough boxes to meet the needs, but we don’t ask for a residence requirement or proof of income or anything like that. It’s pretty much the honor system.” Schlabaugh says for those who can’t make it to drive-thru pickup, arrangements can be made for delivery of food boxes. He says the city hopes they can help ease the stress of those in need heading into the holidays, “We’re seeing, you know, anywhere from the elderly that need a little bit of assistance to a family whose got eight kids under their roof that doesn’t have quite enough.”  Schlabaugh says the city hopes to do another pop-up pantry closer to Christmas.
