COVID-19-related issues have moved all learning to online in the Highland School District through December 2.  Riverside Elementary is part of the district and when students can return to the classroom, those walking to the school will be able to do so more safely.  Riverside Mayor Allen Schneider says, thanks to a “Safe Route to Schools” grant of about $90,000, the city is close to completing the installation of a new stretch of sidewalk along Ellis Street from the intersection of Highway 22 near the Casey’s store all the way to the school, “It should really help creating a good path to the school for a lot of students, especially on the west side of town.  We installed a sidewalk, we put crosswalks in there, I think it helped to eliminate some ditches that we had in that area, and there were not sidewalks in a lot of that area in the past, so students who did take that route to school would have to be walking on the road which is something we did not want to see.”  Schneider says getting the sidewalk project done has been years in the making.
