While severe storms swept through the KCII listening area Monday afternoon, individuals staying at campgrounds might have had difficulties finding a suitable shelter. The National Weather Service reported winds across Iowa reached up to 110 miles per hour, enough to cause significant damage to mobile homes or campers. While many were caught off guard by the strength of this storm, being prepared for the next big storm can make a difference. Lake Darling State Park Ranger Zach Haworth shares some tips for individuals who are at campgrounds during severe weather, “First thing, campers will want to get their awnings stowed away. I’ve seen several that get ripped off because they weren’t secured. It’s a good idea for folks to tidy up their campsites and secure things that could blow away. And not just blow away but could blow into somebody else’s camper or could damage or hurt somebody. Then also be familiar with the best shelter if things could get worse. In our case at Lake Darling the shower building there at the campgrounds is going to be what our campers would utilize if it came to that.” The Iowa DNR also recommends individuals pack a first aid kit, waterproof sheets, a sharp pocket knife, and a loud whistle for a camping trip.
