The top sports stories of the 2010s decade continues today for Washington when we relive some moments from the year 2012.

Having both the boys and girls of summer make the state tournament in the same year is a rarity in the state of Iowa, but Washington accomplished such feat eight years ago. The softball team was steady all year long and won a Southeast Conference title with a 12-4 league record and 32-10 overall mark. They punched their ticket to Fort Dodge with a 4-1 victory over North Scott and then finished fourth in the state by beating Carlisle in the quarterfinals before falling to Dallas Center-Grimes and Clear Creek-Amana in the consolation matches. The young Demon bunch with only one senior was an offensive juggernaut compiling a .394 team batting average led by junior Maddie Bohr with .477.

The Demon baseball team had an up and down season, but got hot at the right time to clinch a state berth. They tied a top of the SEC with a 9-7 record including 22-16 overall. Washington breezed by Fairfield, Grinnell, and Williamsburg to capture a trip to Des Moines. They were pegged with top-seeded Dallas Center-Grimes in the quarterfinals and gave them a run for their money before falling 3-2. The Mustangs would go on to demolish their last two opponents en route to a state title. Five Demons batted over .300 led by current assistant coach TJ Rausch with a.388 BA and 32 RBI.

The softball team wasn’t the only girls program to enjoy success that year, as the basketball squad raised a Southeast Conference banner. The Demons were a perfect 8-0 in the league and finished the 2011-2012 campaign with a 18-5 mark. Average margin of victory in conference for Washington was 19 points before they were tripped up by Keokuk in the postseason. Sydney Greiner and Lauren Vittetoe led the offense with 15 and 12 points per game, respectively.
