KCII continues our coverage of looking back at some of the best sports stories in Southeast Iowa from the previous decade. Today, we take a look at area schools from the year 2012.

It was a successful spring weekend in Des Moines for a few area track athletes with a couple state champs crowned eight years ago. In her junior season, Columbus Community’s Heaven Chandler out jumped the entire class 2A field in the girls long jump with a state champion leap of 18’1.25’’. She continued to dominate the Blue Oval by placing second in the 100m hurdles and third in the 100m dash. Winfield-Mt. Union’s Cassie Kingery took home top honors in class 1A in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.26 seconds. Another notable finish from Drake Stadium was the Lone Tree 4x100m relay team of Rachel Davidson, Carson Gibson, Madelyn Flemr, and Dakota Lamonica placing second.

A handful of area wrestlers found success at Wells Fargo Arena in late February. Highland’s Jess Hahn took home third place at 132 lbs in class 1A and teammate Travis Cole was fifth at 113 lbs. Sigourney’s Steven Clubb had a successful trip finishing fourth at 220 lbs.

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference was dominated by area schools in 2012 with Lone Tree winning both the boys basketball title and baseball. The basketball squad stood atop of the North division with a 16-2 league mark and 20-4 overall record just missing out on a state tournament appearance. Junior Bryan Forbes was the leader with 19.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and five assists a night. The baseball team had the best record in the SEISC-North with a 13-3 record and pitching was a big reason why with a 3.13 team ERA including Andrew Dodson having a 1.97. The Highland softball team was a conference winner with a 14-5 division record and Paige Wieland was a catalyst with a .459 batting average. As for the South Iowa Cedar League, the Keota boys’ basketball team enjoyed a perfect regular season to win the conference and finished 23-1 by losing to Danville in a district final. The Eagles held their opponents to less than 40 points a game and Casey Sieren led the offense with 18.6 points a contest.

Check back in tomorrow when we take a look at a few top stories from 2013.
