Over 130 students from the Mid-Prairie School District will be taught online this fall. The Mid-Prairie School Board recently approved the addition of the Mid-Prairie Virtual Academy, a 100% online program where students complete coursework from their home and high school students receive credits toward their graduation. Virtual Academy students can still participate in extracurricular activities. This option is available for families to choose if the on-site or Home School Assistance Program learning models do not fit their family needs. Interim Virtual Academy Principal Frank Slabaugh told the school board at Monday’s meeting that so far 139 kindergarten through 12th grade students have chosen to pursue the Virtual Academy route of learning. Slabaugh says the breakdown of students enrolled in the program includes: 39 students from East Elementary, 19 students from West Elementary, 35 students from the middle school, and 46 students from the high school.

Families who want to change their student’s learning method, either from online to on-site or vise versa, will have to do so before August 28. After that date, kindergarten through fourth grade students in the program won’t be able to switch learning methods until after the first trimester, ending on November 17. And fifth grade and older students won’t be able to switch their learning method until after the first half-year of school, ending on January 8. Families interested in the Virtual Academy can contact Slabaugh or Mid-Prairie Superintendent Mark Schneider for more information.
