With the summer sports season concluding for area schools, another year has come and gone, and 2020 signifies the end of the decade of athletics. At KCII over the next few weeks we will take a look back, by academic year, at some of the highlights the previous 10 years have brought us. Here is a look back at Mid-Prairie athletics from the 2010-11 academic year.

In the first year of the last decade, the Golden Hawks sent several teams to compete at the state level. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team made back-to-back appearances at the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge. The Hawks were facing elimination in the regional final, at No. 1 Durant, trailing 4-0 and down to their last three outs, with first team all-state pitcher Paige Compton in the circle. Mid-Prairie found a miracle late, rallying for five runs to stun the Wildcats, and advance to Fort Dodge, on contact to left field off the bat of Felicia Schulty. Once at state, Mid-Prairie again used late magic, this time to beat the Nodaway Valley Wolverines 4-3 in the state quarterfinals on a Rachel Miller walk-off single to left. Despite leading into the late innings in the state semifinals, the Golden Hawks couldn’t hold off West Burlington, falling to the Falcons 8-3. Mid-Prairie would rebound to beat Bondurant-Farrar 3-2 in the consolation championship to take home third place. They finished 25-19 overall.

The Mid-Prairie boys and girls track teams sent a combined nine events to the state meet on the blue oval in Des Moines. The Golden Hawk boys qualified five events, finishing in 14th place overall with 17 points scored. Those events included third place for the 4×100 team of Jaemin and Canaan Powell, Ryan Hoffman and Steven Jones, fourth place for the 4×800 team of Peter Schwartz, Jones, Hoffman and Justin Hochstetler, sixth for the 4×200 team of Jaemin Powell, Hoffman, Hochstetler and Jones, 14th for Schwartz in the mile and Hochstetler qualified in the 800.

For the Mid-Prairie girls, they finished 16th overall with 13 points. Top finish for the Golden Hawk girls came from the 4×100 team of Natalie Feigenspan, Courtney Shalla and Meghan and Kattie Redlinger who were state runners-up. Other top finishes included fifth for Fiegenspan in the 100, eighth for the 4×800 team of Tayler Foster, Bridget Miller, Jessi Butters and Mallory McArtor and 16th for the distance medley team of McArtor, Foster and Meghan and Kattie Redlinger.

Three Golden Hawks represented Mid-Prairie at the state cross country meet in Fort Dodge. Justin Hochstetler was a district champion for Mid-Prairie in a time of 16:18. He finished 13th at state in 16:50. Peter Schwartz was 43rd at state in 17:29. For the Golden Hawk girls Sofia Chmaruk was a state qualifier, taking 40th in 16:00.

The Mid-Prairie boys basketball team finished with a 17-7 overall record, 10-4 in the Cedar Valley Conference. The Mid-Prairie football team was also above .500, finishing the year 5-4, including 4-3 in district play. The Golden Hawks posted a 31-12 win over Mediapolis to highlight the season. Brody Barthelman had a big year for the Golden Hawks, putting up the third most touchdowns in a single season with 24, including five each in wins over Clear Creek-Amana and Eddyville-Blakesburg, fourth most points in a single season with 146 and fifth most rushing yards in a year at 1,558. The 2010 Golden Hawk offense had the sixth best ground game in program history. Tuesday will feature the 2011-12 academic year for athletics at Mid-Prairie in our decade in review.
