There was a lot to celebrate in Washington last night for the Demon softball team, as they swept away Iowa City Regina in a doubleheader with a pair of walk-off wins.

As heard on KCII, the Demons had a key defensive double play in the top of the seventh of game one to maintain a 2-2 tie and they carried the momentum into the bottom half of the inning. After Kaitlyn Mitchell was hit by a pitch, Kellie Dallmeyer recorded a single, and Anna Venenga was the hero with an opposite field base hit to bring in the winning run for a 3-2 victory. Washington had 10 hits led by Dallmeyer going 3-for-4 with one RBI and Venenga had a pair of knocks. Cara Linnenkamp threw a complete game in the circle giving up two runs on three hits.

The Demons led throughout the nightcap, but a 6-4 advantage quickly turned into a 6-6 tie in the seventh after a two-run blast off the bat of Regina’s Annie Gahan. Once again, Washington was not phased and immediately answered in the bottom half. Linnenkamp started the inning with an infield hit, a ground out by Alexa Mitchell advanced the runner, and with two outs in the inning pinch hitter RyLee Fishback walked it off with a single to right. Venenga continued to swing a hot bat going 3-for-4 with three runs knocked in. Eighth grader Emmy Wenger notched her second win in the circle in her second career start tossing a complete game giving up seven hits with only a few runs earned and walking no batters.

Senior Kaitlyn Mitchell tells KCII Sports it was a feel good night for the team. “It feels really good because both games were team wins. We were able to string hits together and get into a situation to come back and win. Even though we had a tough inning where they tied the game in the seventh, we got right back to it and were able to score again.”

Washington improves to 6-9 overall and get back into SEC play tomorrow against Fairfield.
