sigourney-3

The baseball and softball season commenced on Monday night and the Sigourney boys and girls of summer split a South Iowa Cedar League opener with a home bout against HLV.

The Savage softball bats started the new campaign red hot, as they exploded for five runs in the first and four more in the second en route to a 11-0 mercy rule victory in five innings. Sigourney peppered 10 hits led by Megan Stuhr going 2-for-3 with three RBI and Dani Richards knocked in a pair of runs. Courtney Hemsley went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Sophomore Madelynn Hornback got the win in the circle with four innings pitched giving up two hits and striking out four. Carly Goodwin struck out the side in the fifth to end the ballgame.

The baseball team had a tough time against the defending SICL Champs in the Warriors by falling 11-2. A 2-1 Warrior lead heading to the third was extended after a four run frame and two more in the fourth. Tacking on three in the sixth put the game out of reach and HLV cruised to the nine run victory. Cade Molyneux recorded two of the Savages four hits and knocked in a run. Payton Schauf had the other RBI and Mason Moore took the loss on the bump, despite just two earned runs in five innings of work.

The Sigourney softball team opens the year 1-0 with baseball at 0-1 and both squads get back on the diamond tonight to host Pleasantville.
