The second best sports story for Washington from the 2019-2020 academic year in our top 10 countdown takes us to a night that soon won’t be forgotten for Demon basketball fans.

On Valentine’s Day the Washington boys hosted Keokuk for senior night with a Southeast Conference crown on the line, something that hasn’t been owned by the Demons since 2007. The game played out exactly how you would expect from two evenly matched teams with both refusing to say die. In front of a packed Washington gym, the Demons jumped all over the Chiefs early to hold an 11-point first quarter lead and 33-23 at the break. That advantage quickly disappeared halfway through the third and both teams traded blows the rest of the way. Washington went up three after a pair of Brock Sobaski made free throws in the waning moments, but a wild Keokuk triple with six seconds left fell through and sent the game to overtime. The nerve racking extra four minutes leaned Washington’s way in a 73-70 victory after late free throws salted the game away. A party broke out on the floor as soon as the buzzer sounded and Sobaski told KCII Sports you couldn’t have wrote a better script.

“It was probably the most fun I have ever had here. I couldn’t have asked for a better senior night. My emotions were everywhere being the last time playing here, but it’s a great feeling coming out with a win.”

Sobaski hauled in 10 rebounds and junior Trashaun Willis came to work finishing with 22 points on nine of 11 shooting and recorded 10 boards.

The Demons finished the season 14-7 and now own a conference banner for the first time in 13 years. Check back in tomorrow for the top story on our countdown when we take a look at a slugfest at Case Field.
