One in 11 Iowans have diabetes in some form, November is Diabetes Awareness Month. And as many as one in three adults has prediabetes. The Iowa Department of Public Health describes prediabetes as “a condition in which blood glucose (sugar) levels are high, but not high enough yet to be classified as type 2 diabetes.” Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes and those with it are at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and serious complications. The IDPH encourages Iowans who do not have diabetes to take a one-minute risk test online to determine their prediabetes risk, click here to take the assessment. If you do have prediabetes, there are ways to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes which can be discussed with your healthcare provider.
