The Sigourney-Keota football team rolled to victory in their first eight games of the season, but due to a low RPI ranking they needed a district championship to secure a playoff bid. In a de-facto district championship game on Friday night in Sigourney, the Bulldogs of Mediapolis came up victorious in a 28-6 affair.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bulldogs controlled the rest of the way taking a 21-0 lead into half and never looking back. Briar Johnson had himself a day for the Bulldogs with two passing touchdowns and two more on the ground. The second best rushing team in the entire state in the Cobras were held to just 88 yards rushing and 94 yards of total offense. JD Stout closed his career with 23 carries for 40 yards and had the only Cobra touchdown with a five-yard rush. Trent Hendricks led the defense with seven tackles. Head Coach Jared Jensen tells KCII Sports that one loss doesn’t take away all that they accomplished. “I told the guys one loss does not define you. That potential 9-0 mark is something we haven’t seen since 2010. Our program is building. I remember when these seniors were freshmen, you could just tell they were bringing the right culture to S-K.”

Sigourney-Keota finished the year 8-1 and 16th in the final RPI rankings. Two teams below them won their district and pushed the Cobras out of the 16-team field for class 1A. The Bulldogs (8-1) face Iowa City Regina (7-2) in the first round on Friday.
