columbus-day

Last year, Governor Kim Reynolds proclaimed Iowa’s first Indigenous Peoples Day on the same day as the federally observed Columbus Day. These are observed on the second Monday of October each year. Many businesses are closed. Banks are closed and the U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail and post offices are closed. According to the Library of Congress, the first recorded celebration of Columbus Day in the United States took place October 12, 1792, the 300th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ landing.
