A century ago today, the local residents who fought in The Great War were honored in Washington. While the first World War ended November 11, 1918, it took nearly a year for a day to be set to honor and thank the soldiers who left Washington County to serve overseas. Newspapers articles from that week claimed 20,000 in attendance, with people coming from neighboring counties to take part. An article reads, “It was a wonderful outpouring of the county’s population as a tribute to the soldiers and sailors of the county.” People gathered in Central Park and Sunset Park. There was a parade, live music, games, and more than 500 soldiers and sailors were registered and awarded medals, as well as five nurses from Washington County.
