We have reached the third best sports story on our top 10 countdown from the 2018-2019 academic year for KCII area schools and it takes us to the links in Sigourney.

The Savage boys golf team had a strong bunch all spring long and it culminated in a district win at Riverside in May that resulted in an automatic berth to the class 1A state meet. Five of their top six players were seniors and the veteran group shot a 343 to lead the pack at Blue Top Ridge. Dustin Haines led the charge with an 81, Josh Mohr had 86, Ian Terfehn with 86, and Nick Goad with 90. Head Coach Zach Tremmel told KCII Sports his team deserved it all. “These kids have come a long way in the last couple years. We knew we were going to have a strong team this year so we scheduled hard teams at hard courses and it paid off for us.”

The Savages would go on to place sixth out of eight teams at state in a rain shortened meet. Haines shot an 84 to finish 18th and Cole Weber was right behind with 85 in 20th. Check back in tomorrow for number two on our countdown when we take a look at area track athletes.
