We have reached the stretch run of our top 10 countdown for the best sports stories at Washington in the 2018-2019 academic year and number five takes us to the soccer pitch in a year to remember.

The Demon girls’ soccer program had a breakout season under head coach Pro Marcelino finishing with an 8-9 record. Those eight wins trumped the last five seasons combined for the Demons including just one win in the past three seasons. Early on it was noticeable that this team was different when they started the 2019 campaign with a 5-1 record including their first Southeast Conference win in four years when they defeated Keokuk 6-0 back on April 4th. A two-headed scoring machine spearheaded the offensive explosion with sophomore Trina Griffin and freshman Greta Rothe. Griffin led the league in scoring with 19 goals while Rothe also cracked the top five with 13. The offense was backed up with improved defense headlined by Olivia Pacha’s 216 saves in goal that was the most in the conference.

Excitement in the program should be here for good, as a hungry Demon bunch returns this spring with no players lost to graduation. Check back in tomorrow for number four on our countdown when we take a look at a cross country state qualifier.
