Washington Demon fans don’t have to go back far to remember the ninth best sports story from the 2018-2019 academic year when the baseball team opened the playoffs with some drama.

On July 19th the Demons played host to Mount Vernon in the first round of a class 3A district. The game was a well-played pitcher’s duel with four Demon hurlers combining to give up just six hits. It was all tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh when Luke Turner led off the frame with a base hit to left field that he legged out for a double. The junior reached third on a balk and was plated on a walk-off single past the shortstop from Brady Knutson. Knutson gave a lot of props to his teammate.  “Luke did a great job starting us off going after the first pitch. They wouldn’t have been in that formation defensively against me if it weren’t for Luke.

Washington would go on to fall to two-time defending state champion Davenport Assumption in the district title game. The 22-win season was the most by the program since 2012. Check back in tomorrow for number eight on our countdown when we have a feel good story from the soccer pitch.
