An excessive heat warning for all of eastern Iowa is still in effect until 7 p.m. tonight. According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures will be in the upper 90s with dangerous heat indices above 105 degrees.

Washington County Public Health Administrator Danielle Pettit-Majewski says it’s a good idea to check on friends and neighbors, especially those without air conditioning, “Checking on our elderly neighbors, you know, making sure that they have access to air conditioning, making sure that they’re okay. Another issue that we see is people with lower incomes maybe they don’t have air conditioning. Thinking about some of the resources in our community: cooling shelters, the library, you know, where can you go during the day to be in the shade. Don’t be counting on just a fan in your house to keep you cool. That air movement might feel good, but it’s not going to be enough to regulate your body temperature to keep you safe.”

Other heat safety tips include avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water throughout the day even when you’re not thirsty, avoid consumption of alcohol and caffeine, and make sure your pets have access to water, shade, or a cool place indoors. It is recommended that people wear lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing and spend time in air conditioning. Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle.
