The new season has begun for the Washington softball team, as they open the playoffs tonight hosting Iowa City Liberty in a class 4A region 5 quarterfinal.

The Demons closed the regular season 22-14 after a 7-3 defeat against Central Lee on Monday. The trio of Molly Sparks, Alexa Mitchell, and Cara Linnenkamp have supported a 1.96 combined ERA in the circle and that will be tested against a Lightning squad that has a .301 team batting average. Iowa City Liberty is 19-21 and is led by Brylee Klosterman with a .481 batting average and 32 runs batted in. Kara Maiers is the ace with a 2.65 ERA.

The winner of tonight’s contest has a date with Cedar Rapids Xavier on Saturday. Listen to the playoff action on FM 106.1 KCII starting at 6:30 p.m. with first pitch at 7 p.m. in Washington.
