Kids are out of school for the summer and are playing in their yards and riding their bikes; motorists are reminded to be extra cautious and alert for bicyclists and children. Washington Police Chief Jim Lester recommends parents remind their children about watching for traffic, “Children on bicycles needs to follow the same rules of the road as adults and motor vehicles, so it’s important to have that discussion with your kids about stopping for the stop sign, using their hand and arm signals for stopping and turns, and things like that. And wearing a helmet is one of the best safety things.” Lester said that every bicyclist should be wearing a proper-fitting helmet.
