With Father’s Day this weekend, preventative healthcare for men is being highlighted by National Men’s Health Week.

According to the Men’s Health Network, men are twice as likely to skip out on preventive health care than women. Washington Family Medicine Physician Dr. Ryan Flannery recommends yearly physicals for men over the age of 40.

Dr. Flannery says these are important, even if the patient feels like they’re in good health, “In a lot of people’s minds, the last place they want to go to is to see the doctor for an overall health exam, especially if they’re feeling well and not having any problems. I always say that the preventative side of what we do as a physician, sometimes can give us the most benefit in a person’s long-term health. It’s a matter of if we can identify problems before they become big problems, we can sometimes intervene and make changes before it becomes a big problem.”

National Men’s Health Week is a national campaign set to bring awareness to men’s health issues. Men’s Health Week is the week leading up to Father’s Day.
