The passenger in a van that crashed into a creek along Highway 218 Wednesday has died. The driver, 77-year-old Jerry Lee Coblentz and passenger 75-year-old Mandy Ann Shetler of Kalona have now both passed away.

At 9:41 a.m. a van in the southbound lanes of Highway 218 went into Goose Creek, about three miles north of G36. As heard live from the scene on KCII, traffic was reduced to one lane while emergency crews worked at the scene. According to the Washington County Communications Office, one person was out of the vehicle and CPR was in progress, but another person was trapped. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the Pontiac Montana went into the west ditch of the southbound lanes of the highway and came to rest on its top in the waterway. Iowa State Patrol, Ainsworth QRS, Ainsworth Fire Department, Riverside QRS, Riverside Fire Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Ambulance, Washington Rescue, Johnson County Ambulance, and the Iowa Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and move over for any vehicles on the side of the road with hazard or emergency lights activated.
