If you receive flowers for Valentine’s Day there are multiple things you can do to lengthen the life of those cut flowers in a vase. Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach state flowers should be put in a clean vase and any foliage below the water line should be removed. Cut about half an inch to one inch off flower stems to promote water uptake and immediately place them in a vase. Adding a floral preservative to the water can also help prolong the life of the flowers. The vase full of flowers should be placed in a cool, brightly lit location. Keep them away from heat sources and drafts. Also, checking the water level daily and adding when necessary can prolong the life of flowers. If the water becomes cloudy or starts to smell, then change it completely.
