A DOT Plow camera shows the conditions of Highway 92 near West Chester Tuesday morning.

Snow and ice covered eastern Iowa Tuesday. The National Weather Service had issued a winter storm warning Monday afternoon through Tuesday night. According to the NWS, Washington received over four inches of snow during the storm. Riverside and West Chester each had four inches.

At Tuesday’s Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting County Engineer Jacob Thorius said the secondary road crews have been busy working to clear roads, scraping, and cutting grooves in the ice, “We’ve been over everything between Thursday and Friday, but a lot of stuff we did Thursday and early Friday morning glazed back over with all the sun we had Friday. The sun was nice but it just glazed everything back over again. They’re doing it again today. Some of them are running that as they’re picking the snow up. So, I just ask for people’s patience and understanding.”

According to the Washington County Communications Office, Washington County had 13 vehicles wreck in the county Tuesday. Of those wrecks, three were along Highway 1 and seven were along Highway 218.

So far this winter, Washington’s total snowfall is more than double the normal amount. Since October, Washington has had 33.2 inches of snow observed. The record was 40 inches set in 1970 for the same time period. Mostly cloudy skies are expected for the rest of the week with temperatures dropping off Friday with highs in the teens.
