Another round of winter weather is sweeping across Iowa, leaving snow and ice in its wake. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Monday afternoon through Tuesday night, including most of the KCII-listening area: Washington, Jefferson, Keokuk, Iowa, and Johnson Counties. Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Marissa Reisen advises people to be careful when cleaning up snow and ice, “Take breaks, not just to get warm but also to give yourself a rest. Especially if you’re an older person, you really do need to take a break. If you start to sweat that’s usually a good time to go inside, because once you’re sweating that’s going to actually bring your temperature down and that’s not going to help as far as hypothermia goes.” Wear layers when venturing outdoors. And when you do go back inside warm up gradually.

In Washington, per city code, property owners and residents shall clear public sidewalks of all snow and ice accumulation within 24 hours after the snow has ceased or ice has formed. If it isn’t cleared, the city may do so and levy the cost against the property.
