snow-removal-2

Snow and ice are in the forecast for Washington and southeastern Iowa. Snow is expected Sunday night into Monday morning with a bit of ice in the afternoon Monday. When clearing your driveway or sidewalks of snow and ice, Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Marissa Reisen recommends taking breaks to avoid exhaustion, “Take breaks, not just to get warm but also to give yourself a rest, especially if you’re an older person you really do need to take a break. If you start to sweat that’s usually a good time to go inside, because once you’re sweating that’s going to actually bring your temperature down and that’s not going to help as far as hypothermia goes.” When you do go back inside, warm up gradually. Reisen also recommends having an emergency kit in your car that includes bottled water, extra layers of clothing, warm blankets, non-perishable food, an ice scraper, kitty litter, and a small shovel.
