Two old Southeast Iowa Superconference rivals met in a boys and girls basketball doubleheader Tuesday night at Lone Tree High School when Iowa Mennonite School visited the Lions.

In the girls game IMS held off Lone Tree for a 57-46 win. IMS had a 9-0 run in the first quarter and held a 15-10 lead after one and a 27-21 lead at the half. The Lady Lions came out of the break with a run of their own to take a brief two point lead in the third quarter. IMS responded with five straight and wouldn’t trail again as they made enough plays down the stretch to finish the win. After the game, IMS head coach Kari Huisinkveld talked about the victory. “I thought we came out fired up and ready to go, it was good to see us get out to a nice start. I thought our defense was key. Credit Lone Tree, they knocked down some threes. I liked our composure. I really challenged the girls to execute and respond. We came out with a much better effort in the fourth quarter.”

IMS was led in the win by Suzanna Yoder with 25 points, Mia Graber added 15. Ashley Musser led Lone Tree with 14 points including four three point goals. With the win, IMS is now 6-6 on the year, Lone Tree falls to 1-11.

The boys contest was back and forth with Lone Tree scoring a 57-55 win. IMS led most of the first half, but Lone Tree hung around between four and seven points before making a late run that included a Tyler McCullough three to go up 29-26 at the half. Out of the break the Lions put together an 8-0 to stretch the lead to 11, but IMS clawed back in, pulling within two points with a minute to go. IMS had a pair of possessions down two and missed both jump shots while the Lions went four of four at the line as Bryce Houser and Keegan Edwards each hit a pair of free throws to ice the game. After the contest, Lone Tree head coach Tom Squires talked about his team’s effort. “I’m really proud of our guys tonight. I thought we stepped up on the defensive end for four quarters. We did a really good job responding to those runs with a basket when we needed one. I thought it was a team effort but we won this game on the defensive end of the floor.”

Edwards led Lone Tree with 14 points, Austin Marshek had 12. IMS was led by Kobe Borntrager with 15 points. Lone Tree is now 4-6 on the year while IMS falls to 7-3.
