The WACO basketball teams played host to Van Buren last night for their first games of the new year, with the girls taking the loss and the boys picking up the win.

The girls game was first, with Van Buren winning by a 46-20 score.  The Warrior girls played 13th-ranked Van Buren pretty well in the first quarter, with the period ending in a 9-9 tie.  But Van Buren would begin to pull away in the second, outscoring the Warriors 16-5.  They would win the second half as well, allowing no WACO points in the third and just six in the fourth to take the 26-point win.

The boys were next, taking down the visitors 54-39.  Double-digit point performances from Nik Coble (13 points), Matthew Leichty (12 points) and Colton Horak (10 points) helped vault them to their eighth win of the year.

The Warriors’ next action comes at home Monday in a KCII-area doubleheader against Sigourney.  Tip-off of the girls’ game is scheduled for 6:00, and the boys will follow.
