The Washington wrestling team will see their first competition at home this season tonight when they welcome Mediapolis and Davenport Assumption to town.

The Demons are coming off a three-duel day on Tuesday in which they won all three, beating HLV, Benton Community and Iowa Valley.  They’ll have a leg up tonight, as neither Mepo nor Assumption have wrestled yet this season.  Head coach Brent Van Weelden says Mediapolis is quite the powerhouse traditionally, and that Washington has developed something of a rivalry with them.

“We kind of have a rivalry with them, I guess, over the years,” Van Weelden said.  “We’ve come out on top lately, but three or four years ago they were taking it to us pretty good.  So it’s a good rivalry between us.”

As for Assumption, they’ve been a thorn in Washington’s side for the last few years; one Van Weelden thinks will give his guys a great test.

“We’ll have our hands full with Davenport Assumption,” Van Weelden said.  “They’ve won state duels a couple times.  We’ve wrestled with them at state duels, and they’ve kept us from going to state duels.  So it’s always fun to wrestle them, and maybe develop a rivalry with them.  It’s kind of hard to have a rivalry if you don’t beat them; we’ve only beaten them once in the last few years.  So that’ll be great competition for us.

Tonight’s meet is set to begin at 6:00.
